Southern Area Action with Travellers (SAAT)
The Southern Area Action with Travellers Steering Group encompasses Health and Social Services, the Housing Executive, the Southern Education and Library Board and Travellers Support Groups. It is informed by needs assessment studies undertaken by the Southern Health and Social Services Board, Children Services Planning, Southern Education and Library Board and the Housing Executive together with needs assessments carried out by local groups. It aims to co-ordinate work to improve the health and wellbeing of Travellers through a community development approach. Martin O'Neillleads this work on behalf of the SAAT Partnership.
What is it all about?
Travelers have very poor health, wellbeing and educational attainment. The proper provision of accommodation is a major need for Travellers. Travellers face racism and discrimination on a daily basis. The SAAT Partnership brings together a range of agencies and projects from the community and voluntary sector to address these issues together with Travellers.
What does the Partnership do?
The Partnership co-ordinates a wide range of activity to improve the lives of Travellers in a practical way. The SHSSB provides funding to SAAT and local Traveller Support Groups to support this work.
