Local people have their say on Mental Health Services

3rd October 2005

Mental health service users from the Southern Health and Social Services Board area have been asked for their views on how to improve those services.

In a workshop organised by the Southern Health and Social Services Board, people from Armagh and Dungannon, Craigavon and Banbridge and Newry and Mourne came together to share their views on the future design of mental health services in the area.

Explaining the purpose of the event, Dr Stephen Bergin, Consultant in Public Health at the Southern Health and Social Services Board said: “The recent 'Bamford' review of mental health services across Northern Ireland highlighted the need for additional community based mental health services. In response to this review we are working to improve the quality of local mental health services.

“There is no one better placed to comment on this process than those who actually use mental health services. That is why it is so important for us to work closely with local people, to hear their views on existing services and to listen to their ideas on how we should shape future developments.”

One participant said that it was a great idea for service users and staff to join together to make better mental health services.
