Delivering a Quality Service is of paramount importance in dental practices. The SHSSB aims to support its practitioners by a variety of methods.

Postgraduate teaching is delivered via the Clinical Governance Study Club with tutors Dr Owen Thompson and Dr David McCaughey.

Sessions are interactive, informal and cover a variety of topics including practical application of techniques.  Preparatory reading materials are made available on CD in advance and practitioners are encouraged to select patients from their own case load for discussion.  The programme for 05/06 has just finished and on 28 and29 September 2006the 3rd Annual Symposium for the Study Club will launch the 2006/07 programme.

Attendees from across Northern Ireland will be welcome and following the success of running a parallel 11 sessions for dental nurses, hygienists and therapists, this will also be featured in the September Symposium.  A detailed programme and application form will be posted on the Web before June 2006.

Practices have also undertaken a self audit of their Infection Control procedures.  Linked to this is training in the use of a bespoke Manual Guidance for the control of infection in Dental Practice which acts as a training tool for all members of the dental team.

This has been produced by SHSSB in association with Dr C Pankhurst Consultant Microbiologist,London, and Dr W Coulter Consultant Microbiologist, QUB. Coupled with its companion CD ROM this is proving to be an excellent training resource for all members of the dental team.  The complete package has been adopted by DPSSPS (NI) for regional use has received financial support from the Department.

Details of the audit and manual are included in board paper – reference number SB8/06.
