Acute Services within the Southern Health & Social Services Board's Area
Acute care encompasses a wide range of in-patient, out-patient, day case and accident and emergency services.
There are two main Acute Hospitals within the Board's area offering high quality care 24 hours a day. These are Craigavon Area Hospital and Daisy Hill Hospital. Both provide general medical (including elderly care), Paediatric, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and surgical specialties; an Accident and Emgerency Department; an Intensive Care and/or High Dependency Unit; Anaesthetics; a range of investigative facilities, including Pathology and Radiology. In addition Craigavon Area Hospital is one of four Cancer Units in Northern Ireland providing symptomatic breast clinic and breast screening assessment services, chemotherapy and enhanced cancer pharmalogical services. Other specialist services offered by the hospital include: a mobile cardiac catheterisation unit providing diagnostic tests, mobile MRI scanner, hyperbaric services and a range of out-patient regional outreach services. Daisy Hill Hospital is a sub-regional unit for renal services, including maintenance haemodialysis. It also provides paediatric ambulatory services and a range of out-patient regional outreach services.
Both Craigavon and Daisy Hill Hospitals are supported by a number of local hospitals providing a range of out-patient, day case, in-patient elderly care and diagnostic and treatment support services to the local population. These include:
- Banbridge Polyclinic (former Banbridge Hospital site) which provides a comprehensive range of out-patient, diagnostic and treatment support services.
- Armagh Community Hospital which provides a range of out- patient and diagnostic services supported by visiting medical consultants from local acute and regional hospitals.
- Mullinure Hospital which provides in-patient, out-patient and day hospital services to the elderly.
- Lurgan Hospitial which provides in-patient, out-patient and day hospital services to the elderly. The hospital also has a Stroke Rehabilitation Unit and provides dermatology in-patient services.
- South Tyrone Hospital provides an extensive range of out-patient and diagnostic facilities, including a minor injuries unit, pain management service, day case ophthalmology, day surgery services, ambulatory paediatrics, CT scans, bone densitometry out-patient renal services and inpatient elderly care services. South Tyrone Hospital has recently been identified as a "protected elective" facility and plans are underway to further develop services provided from this site.
- Loane House (On the South Tyrone Hospital Site) provides in-patient, out-patient and day hospital services to the elderly.
- Mourne Hospital offers a range of out-patient services.
