A Strategic Vision for Health and Social Care Services for Older People 2002-2007
The Board has developed a strategy for the future development of services for older people.
In Phase 1 the Board and Trusts worked in partnership to look at the range of general services which need to be established to meet older people's needs. In addition the Southern Health and Social Services Council facilitated a Stakeholder Forum comprising users, carers and voluntary organisations. The role of this Forum was to advise upon and inform the strategy as work progressed.
The strategy reflects the need for a range of services from prevention to long term care. The main proposals are to:
- Further develop community based activities and schemes that promote and maintain health and well-being for older people
- Help people to remain at home with the appropriate support
- Work with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to develop a plan to meet the housing needs of older people
- Further develop intermediate care as a short-term support between hospital and home
- Ensure appropriate and high quality residential and nursing home care
- Ensure access to appropriate hospital services
In Phase 2 the Board and Trusts has looked at services for people with dementia. A consultation document has been issued, and can be accessed by go to the document library under consultation documents, or by contacting Ruth Hanna at 028 37 4100 ext 4649. Comments on the documents should be made by 14 October 2005.
