Social Care

The Department of Social Care has responsibility for commissioning appropriate personal social services to residents of the Southern Board.

Social Services are provided to a wide range of people and their carers and nclude older people, people who have a physical disability or sensory impairment, people with a learning disability or mental illness and children and their families.

The role of the Directorate is to assess the social care needs of local people and to assist in commissioning to meet those needs. Services are commissioned through contracts with hospital and community Trusts, other statutory bodies and the voluntary and private sectors. Staff work collaboratively with these organisations and with other Health and Social Services Boards in planning services and in developing policies.

The Directorate also takes a lead role in implementing the Board's Community Development Strategy and policies in protection of vulnerable adults.

With effect from the 1st April 2009 the responsibilities of the Southern Health and Social Services Board have transferred to the new Health and Social Care Board, Business Services Organisation and the Public Health Agency.
