Emergency Planning within SHSSB

The need for Health and Social Services to be prepared for major emergencies has always been important.   Major events like 9/11, and the potential of an Influenza Pandemic in the future, make this very clear.

Emergency Planning within the SHSSB includes reviewing and updating our Major Incident Plan and working with individual Trusts to further develop their emergency planning capacity.

A copy of the SHSSB’s Major Incident Plan can be viewed here.

Emergency planning training is delivered to key staff and emergency planning exercises are carried out to test the Board’s readiness to deal with a range of major emergencies, for example, pandemic or avian flu.

Work is also continuing to test Major Incident Plans across Trusts in the SHSSB.  A number of inter-agency exercises have been carried out and more are planned for the coming year.

The SHSSB understands the importance of working with other organisations in relation to emergency planning.   We are therefore working closely with local District Councils, PSNI, NI Fire & Rescue Service and others within this area to be better able to respond to major incidents.

Emergency Planning is an area that is constantly changing and developing.  The SHSSB will continue to develop its emergency planning capacity and readiness to ensure that we can be as prepared as possible to deal with a range of emergencies.

With effect from the 1st April 2009 the responsibilities of the Southern Health and Social Services Board have transferred to the new Health and Social Care Board, Business Services Organisation and the Public Health Agency.
