SAUCS - Southern Area Urgent Care Services
What is SAUCS - Southern Area Urgent Care Services?
Following the introduction of the new GP contract in April 2004, GPs became entitled to opt out of providing Out of Hours patient care.
The Southern Area Urgent Care Services (SAUCS) was founded in December 2004 when the responsibility for meeting the out of hours medical needs of the population passed to the Southern Health and Social Services Board.
The operational responsibility of Southern Area Urgent Care Services transferred to the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in April 2007.
Using the Service
It is the role of SAUCS to ensure the provision of appropriate care to patients between 6.30pm and 8.00am Monday to Friday and during the weekends and Bank Holidays.
The service is offered to those patients who have an urgent medical condition that cannot wait until their own GP surgery is next open.
To use the service patients are asked to phone 0870 600 6009.
A receptionist takes the patient’s details and a GP will phone them back as soon as possible.
The patient may be given advice over the phone, asked to attend a centre, they may be offered a home visit, or may be redirected to a more appropriate service e.g. Accident and Emergency, Pharmacy, Out of Hours Social Worker.
